NoteCards system installation The NoteCards system is designed to be installed on a Xerox 1108 with a rigid disk configuration as given in the 1108 Users Guide, section 4. Please refer to that document if you have any questions about the instructions that will follow. 1. Installing NoteCards from a floppy disk - See page 18 of the 1108 Users Guide for details on the use of the floppy disk drive ,then follow these instructions to install your NoteCards sysout: 1. Enter the Lisp System Tool 'base state' by performing a 1-boot. 2. Press the left mouse button. This will bring up the Lisp System Tool. 3. Find the "Device:" field, point to "FLOPPY" and press the left mouse button. The "File:" field should now contain "Lisp.sysout". 4. Find the "Volume Menu:" field and press the left mouse button. Input the name of the logical volume you wish to load NoteCards into. This name should be "Lisp", "Lisp2", or "Lisp3". 5. Point to "Install File!" and press the left mouse button. Follow the dialogue to load your NoteCards sysout floppies. The system will ask you to confirm with the left mouse button that the correct floppy is in the 1108 floppy drive each time a new one is to be inserted. The process should take several minutes. 6. Once installation has been completed, point to "Boot!" and press the left mouse button to boot your fresh NoteCards volume. 2. Installing NoteCards from a fileserver - If your 1108 is connected to a file server, and you wish to load a NoteCards sysout from that fileserver, follow these instructions to install your NoteCards sysout: 1. Enter the Lisp System Tool 'base state' by performing a 1-boot. 2. Press the left mouse button. This will bring up the Lisp System Tool. 3. Find the "Device:" field, and make sure it points to "FS" or "IFS". 4. Find the "Volume Menu:" field and press the left mouse button. Input the name of the fileserver, the proper directories and subdirectories, and the sysout file name according to the following conventions: For an IFS fileserver, input is to be of the form: [server]subdirectory>...>filename.sysout For an FS fileserver, the input is to be of the form: [server:domain:organization]subdirectory>...>filename.sysout 5. 3. Installing NoteCards from another logical volume - If your 1108 has a 29 or 43 megabyte local disk, you can store a copy of an unused NoteCards sysout on your local disk, copying it to an active Lisp volume whenever you wish to load a new one there. This will eliminate the need for continued use of the NoteCards Sysout floppy disks, or improve dramatically the time it takes to load a sysout from a remote fileserver. To do this, follow these instructions: 1. Install a NoteCards sysout on one of your logical volumes by following steps 1 through 5 of section 1 or section 2 of this document. This volume now contains a fresh NoteCards sysout. 2. Point to the "Copy VMem" field and press the left mouse button. This will bring up a Copy VMem window. 3. Point to the "Source Volume:" field of the Copy VMem window, press the left mouse button, and input the name of the Lisp volume containing your fresh NoteCards sysout. 4. Point to the "Dest. Volume:" field of the Copy VMem window, press the left mouse button, and input the name of the Lisp volume you wish to use as your active NoteCards volume. 5. Point to the "Start!" field of the Copy VMem window, and press the left mouse button. 6. The system will ask if you wish to continue with this operation. Press the left mouse button if you do. The Copy VMem operation should take about 1 minute. 7. When the Copy VMem operation is completed, the system will ask if you wish to boot into your active NoteCards volume. Press the left mouse button if you do. If at any time a "Boot!" selection from the Lisp System Tool fails to boot a sysout, you will need to copy a fresh sysout to the volume you attempted to boot from in order to successfully boot from it again.
