The Lisp Library #2 is an exact duplicate of the diskette contained in the standard InterLisp-D release. It is included in the NoteCards distribution for convenience. Overview of NoteCards Installation The NoteCards system is designed to be installed on a stand-alone 1108 with a 29 or 43 Megabyte local disk. When NoteCards is installed, the local disk is partitioned to accomodate all of software necessary to run both the NoteCards system and the standard-release InterLisp-D system. Thus the local disk is partitioned into 5 volumes as follows: 1) the Diagnostics volume contains the software for booting NoteCards and InterLisp as well as the software necessary for the Xerox Tech Reps to repair the machine (should it ever break). 2) the NoteCards volume contains the system software (i.e., called the sysout) for the basic NoteCards system. 3) the InterLisp volume contains the standard-release InterLisp-D sysout. 4) the WorkSpace volume is used to contain the currently running version of Lisp, either NoteCards or InterLisp-D depending on which was last copied onto the WorkSpace volume. 5) the DSK volume contains all of the user files and is accessable from both NoteCards and standard InterLisp. This setup is designed to allow the user to switch between NoteCards and standard InterLisp. To use NoteCards, the sysout on the NoteCards volume must initially be copied (using the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool, as explained below) to the WorkSpace volume. Once copied to WorkSpace, NoteCards can be run on the WorkSpace volume. As long as no other sysout is copied onto the WorkSpace volume, the user can log out of NoteCards, and then return to NoteCards by simply restarting the NoteCards system on the WorkSpace volume. However, if the user wants to run standard InterLisp-D, a new sysout must be copied from the InterLisp volume onto the WorkSpace volume (destroying the NoteCards sysout on the WorkSpace volume). InterLisp-D can then be started and restarted on the WorkSpace volume, until it is replaced by the NoteCards sysout from the NoteCards volume. If the NoteCards (or InterLisp) sysout on the WorkSpace volume stumbles into an unrecoverable error state (as occasionally happens), the system can be restarted by copying a fresh sysout from the NoteCards (InterLisp) volume to the WorkSpace volume and then rebooting. In fact, it is recommended that the NoteCards (or InterLisp) sysout be recopied to the WorkSpace volume on a regular basis; daily, semi-weekly, or weekly depending on the level of use. Sysouts tend to degrade with use. Copying a fresh sysout onto the WorkSpace volume at regular intervals insures that the sysout in current use (i.e., the sysout on the WorkSpace volume) never degrades to unacceptable levels of performance. Note that copying a sysout from the NoteCards or InterLisp volumes to the WorkSpace volume has no effect on the user files stored on the Dsk volume. While it is good practice to regularly backup these user files onto floppies, it is not necessary to do a backup of Dsk every time a sysout is copied. Part 1: General Information About Using the 1108 The maintenance panel of the 1108 is located just above the Xerox label on the front of the processor. It has a cover that should be pulled down to reveal the panel. The panel consists of, from left to right, a 4-digit LED display, two buttons (the B RESET and the ALT B buttons) and a power switch. I. Powering on the 1108. To power-on the 1108, use the rocker switch at the right end of the maintenance panel. Hold down the B RESET and ALT B buttons while toggling the rocker switch to the On position. Release the B RESET and ALT B buttons as described under Booting the 1108 below. II. Booting the 1108. In the several procedures outlined below, the user is asked to boot the 1108. To boot the 1108, simultaneously depress both the B RESET and ALT B buttons in the center of the maintenance panel. Release the B RESET button (the one on the left), but keep the ALT B button depressed. The 4-digit LED display will go blank and then display 8888 for a few seconds. The display will then begin to cycle slowly through the sequence of numbers 0000, 0001, 0002, ..., 0010, 0000 .... Release the ALT B button when the numeric display reaches the number specified in the procedural instructions. For example, to do a 2-boot you would hold down the ALT B button until the numeric display had reached 0002. In general, a 0-boot (releasing the ALT B button at 0000) or a 1-boot (releasing the ALT B button at 0001) will boot from software stored on the local rigid disk. A 2-boot causes the system to be booted from a floppy diskette. III. Using the floppy disk drive. The floppy disk drive is located on the front of the processor just above the maintenance panel. When the drive is in operation, a small red light, located just above the maintenance panel, will be illuminated. A. Loading a Floppy Diskette into the Drive 1) Open the door of the floppy drive by pressing the open-door bar, the 2-inch wide rectangular bar located in the middle of the processor just above the maintenance panel. 2) Insert the floppy diskette, label side up and with the slit in the cover towards the back. 3) When the diskette is fully in the drive, you will hear a click. If the diskette is not fully inserted, it will pop out when you release it. 4) Close the door of the drive by pushing down firmly on the handle attached to the bottom of the door. B. Unloading a Floppy Diskette from the Drive. 1) Make sure the red activity light located on the rectangular open-door bar is NOT illuminated. 2) Press the "open-door" bar. The floppy diskette will pop halfway out of the drive. 3) Remove the diskette and store it. Close the door of the drive. Part 2: Initial Installation of NoteCards and InterLisp-D The following procedure should be used for complete reinstallation of the NoteCards and InterLisp-D systems. WARNING: This procedure destroys the entire contents of the 1108 local disk. If the procedure is being used for re-installation of these systems, be sure to save any user files from the DSK volume onto floppy disks. I. Boot from the NoteCards Installation Utility diskette. 0) Power on the 1108. 1) Insert the NoteCards Installation Utility diskette into the floppy disk drive. Do a 2-boot. It will take approximately 30 seconds to boot from the floppy. 2) The 1108 will then prompt you for to enter the time as follows: 1108: Time zone offset from Greenwhich (-12 - 12): Response: Enter 5 followed by a RETURN. (Note: -5 is for EST, use -8 for PST, -7 for RMT, etc.) 1108: Minute offset (0-59): 0 Response: Just type RETURN to indicate that 0 is the appropriate answer. 1108: First day of Daylight Savings Time (0-366): 121 Response: Just type RETURN to indicate that 121 is the appropriate answer. 1108: Last day of Daylight Savings Time (0-366): 305 Response: Just type RETURN to indicate that 305 is the appropriate answer. 1108: Please enter the date and time: Response: Enter the date and time in the format month/day/year hours:minutes:seconds followed by a RETURN, e.g., 6/26/84 22:52:00 RETURN 1108: Set time to June 26, 1984 10:52 PM Okay? Response: Y followed by a RETURN. (Respond N if you wish to reset the time.) 3) After a brief delay, a listing of 6 options will appear on the terminal screen. The next step is to partition the local rigid disk, as described in the following section. II. Partition the local rigid disk. 1) From the list of 6 options on the screen, choose option 1 (Partition Disk) by typing a 1 followed by a RETURN. 2) The 1108 will print a warning and ask you for permission to proceed. Respond with a Y followed by a RETURN. 3) The 1108 will then partition the disk. Partitioning takes approximately 5 minutes, during which there will be NO feedback from the 1108. 4) Partitioning is complete when the list of 6 options is reprinted on the screen. III. Construct the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool 1) From the list of 6 options on the screen, choose option 2 (Contruct Install Tool) by typing 2 followed by RETURN. 2) The 1108 will ask you for permission to proceed. Respond with a Y followed by a RETURN. 3) The 1108 will print: This Floppy Disk is labelled "Installation Utility" Insert Floppy Disk labelled "NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool" in Floppy Disk Drive Remove the Installation Utility diskette and insert the Install Tool diskette into the floppy drive. (If you insert the incorrect diskette, the system will repeat this step.) 4) When the door of the floppy drive is closed, the 1108 will begin to construct the Install Tool. It will take about 5 minutes, during which there will be NO feedback on the 1108 screen. 5) The Install Tool is completed when the list of 6 options is reprinted on the screen. IV. Copy the NoteCards sysout to the NoteCards volume. 1) From the list of 6 options on the screen, choose option 3 (NoteCards software) by typing 3 followed by RETURN. 2) The 1108 will ask you for permission to proceed. Respond with a Y followed by a RETURN. 3) The 1108 will then erase the NoteCards volume, which takes about 10 seconds. 4) The 1108 will then print: This Floppy Disk is labelled "NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool" Insert Floppy Disk labelled "NoteCards Sysout #1" in Floppy Disk Drive Remove the Install Tool diskette and insert the NoteCards Sysout#1 diskette into the floppy drive. 5) When the door of the floppy drive is closed, the 1108 will begin to copy NoteCards sysout. It will take about 2 minutes to copy the diskette onto the NoteCards volume. 6) Steps 4 and 5 will be repeated 3 more times, once for each of the NoteCards Sysouts #2, #3 and #4. The 4th repeat will take only about 15 seconds. 7) The copying is completed when the list of 6 options is reprinted on the screen. NOTE: If the 1108 prints the word (more) but no list of options, type a SPACE to bring-up the list of options. V. Copy the InterLisp-D release to the InterLisp volume NOTE: You will need the Lisp Sysout diskettes from the standard InterLisp release, e.g., the Fugue 6 or Carol 1 release. If these diskettes are not available, this step may be skipped. 1) From the list of 6 options on the screen, choose option 4 (InterLisp software) by typing 4 followed by RETURN. 2) The 1108 will ask you for permission to proceed. Respond with a Y followed by a RETURN. 3) The 1108 will then erase the InterLisp volume, which takes about 10 seconds. 4) The 1108 will then print: This Floppy Disk is labelled "NoteCards Sysout #4" Insert Floppy Disk labelled "Lisp Sysout #1" in Floppy Disk Drive Remove the diskette from the floppy drive and insert the Lisp Sysout#1 diskette into the floppy drive. 5) When the door of the floppy drive is closed, the 1108 will begin to copy the InterLisp sysout. It will take about 2 minutes to copy the diskette onto the InterLisp volume. 6) Steps 4 and 5 will be repeated up to 4 more times, once for each of the Lisp Sysout diskettes. After the 2nd repeat (3rd sysout diskette), the 1108 will ask if there are any more diskettes. Specifically, it will print Another Disk? (Y/N). If the standard InterLisp release you are using has more Lisp Sysout diskettes, then answer Y followed by RETURN, and then continue repeating steps 4 and 5. If there are no more Lisp Sysout diskettes, type N followed by RETURN. 7) The copying is completed when the list of 6 options is reprinted on the screen. VI. Initialize the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool. 1) From the list of 6 options on the screen, choose option 5 (Boot into Install Tool) by typing 5 followed by RETURN. 2) At this point the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool will boot. It takes about 2 minutes. When the Install Tool is finished booting, there will be a thin white bar across the top of the screen and a small white window containing the words "Executive 10.0" in the lower left corner of the screen. The cursor will be either a two-headed vertical arrow or a single-headed upward-right pointing arrow. 3) Move the cursor into the window in the lower left corner of the screen. Position it just above the letters "cut". Press the left button on the mouse. The "Executive 10.0" window will expand to fill the whole screen. 4) Move the cursor to the ">" symbol in the upper-left corner of the expanded window. Press the left mouse button to activate the expanded window. The ">" will invert to a white character on a black background. 5) Remove any diskette in the floppy drive and then insert the diskette labelled "NoteCards Installation Utility" 6) Type in floppy read InstallLispTool.bcd followed by a RETURN. This will cause a file to be copied from the floppy to the local rigid disk, taking about 15 seconds. 7) Type in InstallLispTool followed by a RETURN. This will start up the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool. After about 20 seconds, a white rectangle will appear and begin bouncing slowly around the screen. This is the base state for the Install Tool. 8) Simultaneously press the left and right buttons on the mouse. This should cause a white window to appear in the upper right quadrant of the screen. Move the cursor into this window and point to the words "Set Profile" appearing near the left edge of the window. Press the left button on the mouse TWICE. When the word "Done" appears just below "Set Profile", point to the word "Quit" (appearing just to the right of "Set Profile") and press the left mouse button. This will close the window and return to the base state. VII. Initialize the NoteCards system. Start and initialize the NoteCards system as follows: 1) In the base state of the Install Tool (white rectangle bouncing around the screen), press the left mouse button. This will open a window in the upper right quadrant of the screen. 2) Position the cursor over the word "Remote Boot" near the middle of this window, and then press the left mouse button TWICE. This will bring up another window on top of the old window. 3) Position the cursor over the words "Source Volume" in this new window and simultaneously depress AND KEEP DEPRESSED both the left and right mouse buttons. This will bring up a small menu showing the volumes on the local disk. Move the cursor (holding the two buttons down) until it points to the NoteCards entry (i.e., until the NoteCards entry is inverted to white letters on a black background). Let up on the two mouse buttons. This should insert the word "NoteCards" next to the words "Source Volume". 4) Position the cursor over the words "Destination Volume" in this window and simultaneously depress AND KEEP DEPRESSED both the left and right mouse buttons. This will bring up a small menu showing the volumes on the local disk. Select the WorkSpace entry in this menu by pointing to WorkSpace and releasing the mouse buttons. This should insert the word "WorkSpace" next to the words "Destination Volume". 5) Point to the word "Start" and press the left mouse button TWICE. This will begin the process of copying the NoteCards sysout onto the WorkSpace volume. The copy process should take 2 to 3 minutes. 6) When the copy is finished, the question Boot the Destination Volume? will be printed in the window, and the cursor will change into a rectangular shape. Press the left mouse button. The screen will go blank. After approximately 1 minute, the NoteCards system will appear on the screen. 7) The NoteCards screen consists of several windows placed near the top of the screen. The white window in the lower row near the middle of the screen is called the Exec Window. 8) In the Exec Window will be printed Please enter my pup host number (in octal):. Just type in a 5 followed by RETURN. 9) After a brief delay (10 seconds). Some messages will briefly flash in the Exec Window. Ignore them. 10) The word Login: will be printed in the Exec Window. Type in your LAST name followed by two SPACES. The system will respond NoteCards, and then print a number followed by an _ in the Exec Window. Next to the _ will be a flashing caret. 11) REMOVE ANY DISKETTE IN THE FLOPPY DISK DRIVE. Failure to remove the diskette will cause problems in the following step. 12) Type in (INSTALL). The system will respond by printing {DSK} is already a core device. Do you want to smash it?. Respond by typing a single Y (a RETURN is not needed). 13) After a brief delay, the message Please Insert the Lisp Library #2 diskette will be printed in the black prompt window at the top of the screen. Insert the "Lisp Library #2" diskette (from either the NoteCards distribution or the standard InterLisp-D release) into the floppy disk drive. The system will begin copying character font files from this diskette onto the local rigid disk. The copying will take approximately 4 minutes. When it is finished the system will print "Done" in the Exec Window. 14) Remove the "Lisp Library #2" diskette from the floppy drive and insert the "NoteCards Sources and MapData" diskette into the floppy drive. Position the cursor over the words "NoteFile Ops" in the main menu window in the middle of the lower row of windows. Press the left mouse button. This will bring up a menu consisting of a number of possible operations. Select the "Restore from floppy" operation by moving the cursor over this item and pressing the left mouse button. 15) The system will print Enter name of NoteFile to be restored -- in the black prompt window at the top of the screen. Respond by typing in WORLD5.MAPDATA followed by a RETURN. The system will then copy the map database from the floppy onto the local rigid disk. The copy will take approximately 5 minutes. When it is done, a completion message will appear in the prompt window. 16) Remove the "NoteCards Sources and MapData" diskette from the floppy drive and insert the "Nato-missiles Demo NoteFile" diskette into the floppy drive. Position the cursor over the words "NoteFile Ops" in the main menu window in the middle the lower row of windows. Press the left mouse button. This will bring up a menu consisting of a number of possible operations. Select the "Restore from floppy" operation by moving the cursor over this item and pressing the left mouse button. 17) The system will print Enter name of NoteFile to be restored -- in the black prompt window at the top of the screen. Respond by typing in NATO-MISSILES followed by a RETURN. The system will then copy the demonstration NoteFile from the floppy to the local rigid disk. The copy will take approximately 5 minutes. When it is done, a completion message will appear in the prompt window. 18) Remove the "NoteCards Sources and MapData" diskette from the floppy drive. 19) The NoteCards system is now installed and ready to run. Refer to the NoteCards reference manual for further information. If you want to exit NoteCards immediately, just type in (LOGOUT). After 2 to 3 minutes, the system will return to the Install Tool base state (bouncing white rectangle). The machine can be turned off at this point. Part 3: Daily Booting Procedures Immediately after the 1108 is powered-on, it must be booted from a floppy diskette. There is a special "NoteCards Daily Boot" diskette for this purpose. The major function of this diskette is to query the user for the correct time. After the time has been set, the user can either start the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool, or boot directly into the Lisp currently on the WorkSpace volume. I. Booting from the Daily Boot diskette. 0) Power on the 1108. (Remember to depress the B RESET and ALT B buttons before toggling the power switch.) 1) Keeping the B RESET and ALT B buttons depressed, insert the NoteCards Daily Boot diskette into the floppy disk drive. 2) Do a 2-boot. It will take approximately 30 seconds to boot from the floppy. 3) The 1108 will then prompt you for to enter the time as follows: 1108: Time zone offset from Greenwhich (-12 - 12): Response: Enter 5 followed by a RETURN. (Respond N if you wish to reset the time.) 3) After a brief delay, a listing of 2 options will appear on the terminal screen. Option 1 allows you to start (boot) the NoteCards/Lisp Install Tool, which in turn allows you to copy a new sysout onto the WorkSpace volume. Option 2 allows you to boot directly into the Lisp currently installed on the WorkSpace volume. 4) Remove any diskette that is in the floppy disk drive. II. Booting directly into the Lisp on the WorkSpace volume. If you want to restart the Lisp (either NoteCards or InterLisp-D) that is currently stored on the WorkSpace volume, then do the following: 1) From the list of options displayed after booting the Daily Boot diskette, choose Option 2 (i.e., type 2 followed by a RETURN). 2) The screen will go blank. After approximately 1 minute, the NoteCards system will appear on the screen. 3) The NoteCards (InterLisp-D) screen consists of several windows arranged on the screen. In one of these windows, the Exec Window, the system will print Please enter my pup host number (in octal):. Just type in a 5 followed by RETURN. 4) After a brief delay (10 seconds), the system will enter its resting state: a flashing caret in the Exec Window next to a number followed by a _. 5) Type (LOGIN). The system will promt you for your name. Just type your LAST name, followed by TWO spaces. The system is now ready for use. 6) When you are finished, type (LOGOUT). After 2 to 3 minutes, the system will return to the Install Tool base state (bouncing white rectangle). The machine can be turned off at this point. The system can be restarted at the exact point you typed (LOGOUT) by following this same procedure when the machine is powered-on again. III. Using the Install Tool to copy a sysout to WorkSpace If you want to start a clean version of either NoteCards or InterLisp, you will need to use the Install Tool to copy the sysout to the WorkSpace volume. The procedure for doing this is as follows: 1) From the list of options displayed after booting the Daily Boot diskette, choose Option 1 (i.e., type 1 followed by a RETURN). 2) The screen will go blank. After 2 to 3 minutes, the system will reach the base state of the Lisp Install Tool; i.e., the white rectangle will be bouncing around a black background. [Note: Occasionally, instead of blanking the screen, the system will print Something's wrong. Cannot proceed. Press any key. If this happens, do a 1-boot. This should force the system to boot into the Lisp Install Tool, and you can proceed to the next step.] 3) Press the left mouse button. This will open a window in the upper right quadrant of the screen. 4) Position the cursor over the word "Remote Boot" near the middle of this window, and then press the left mouse button TWICE. This will bring up another window on top of the previous window. 5) Position the cursor over the words "Source Volume" in this new window. Simultaneously depress AND KEEP DEPRESSED both the left and right mouse buttons. This will bring up a small menu showing the volumes on the local disk. If you wish to copy the NoteCards system to the WorkSpace volume, then move the cursor (holding the two buttons down) until it points to the NoteCards entry (i.e., until the NoteCards entry is inverted to white letters on a black background). Let up on the two mouse buttons. This should insert the word "NoteCards" next to the words "Source Volume". [Alternatively, if you want to copy the standard InterLisp-D system to the WorkSpace, select InterLisp as the source volume in an analogous manner.] 6) Position the cursor over the words "Destination Volume" in this window. Simultaneously depress AND KEEP DEPRESSED both the left and right mouse buttons. This will bring up a small menu showing the volumes on the local disk. Select the WorkSpace entry in this menu by pointing to WorkSpace and releasing the two mouse buttons. This should insert the word "WorkSpace" next to the words "Destination Volume". 7) Position the cursor over the word "Start" and press the left mouse button TWICE. This will begin the process of copying the NoteCards sysout onto the WorkSpace volume. The copy process should take 2 to 3 minutes. 8) When the copy is finished, the question Boot the Destination Volume? will be printed in the window and the cursor will change into a rectangular shape. Press the left mouse button. The screen will go blank. After approximately 1 minute, the NoteCards (or InterLisp-D) system will appear on the screen. 9) The NoteCards (InterLisp-D) screen consists of several windows arranged on the screen. In one of these windows, the Exec Window, the system will print Please enter my pup host number (in octal):. Just type in a 5 followed by RETURN. 10) If you are booting NOTECARDS: After a brief delay (10 seconds), the system will print a messege about "{DSK}" in the Exec Window. Ignore this message. The word Login: will then be printed in the Exec Window. Type in your LAST name followed by TWO SPACES. The system will respond NoteCards and then print a number followed by an _ in the Exec Window. Next to the _ will be a flashing caret. You are now ready to run NoteCards. If you are booting STANDARD INTERLISP-D: After a brief delay (10 seconds), the system will print Please enter name of system init file (e.g., {server}INIT.extension). If you have a system init file on your local disk, type {DSK}INIT.LISP followed by RETURN. Otherwise, just type RETURN. The system init file (if any) and any personalized init files called by the system init file will then execute. When they are completed, the system will print a number followed by an _ in the Exec Window. Next to the _ will be a flashing caret. You are now ready to run InterLisp-D. (See InterLisp reference manual for information about init files.) 11) When you are finished, type (LOGOUT). After 2 to 3 minutes, the system will return to the Install Tool base state (bouncing white rectangle). The machine can be turned off at this point. The system can be restarted at the exact point at which you typed (LOGOUT) by following the "Booting directly into the Lisp on the WorkSpace" procedure when the machine is powered-on again. IV. Alternative Booting Procedures. A. If the 1108 has NOT been powered-off since the last boot from the Daily Boot floppy, the system clock will still be correctly set. The rebooting from the Daily Boot floppy will not be necessary (though it can be done without causing any problems). To boot directly into the Lisp on the WorkSpace volume: do a 0-boot and then pick up the appropriate Daily Boot procedure (II in the preceeding section) at step 2. To boot into the Install Tool in order to copy a new sysout to WorkSpace: do a 1-boot and then pick up the appropriate Daily Boot procedure (III in the preceeding section) at step 2. B. The Lisp currently on the WorkSpace volume can also be started from the Install Tool. 1) If the install tool is in its base state (bouncing rectangle on a black screen), press the left mouse button. This will bring up a window in the upper right quadrant of the screen. 2) Position the cursor over the words "Volume Menu" in this window. Simultaneously depress and KEEP DEPRESSED both the left and right mouse buttons. This will bring up a menu of volumes on the local disk. Select the WorkSpace volume by positioning the cursor over the WorkSpace entry in this menu and then releasing the two mouse buttons. The work "WorkSpace" should appear just to the right of the words "Volume Menu". 3) Position the cursor over the words "Start Volume" in the window and press the left mouse button TWICE. The screen will go blank and after about 1 minute the current Lisp system (NoteCards or InterLisp) will appear on the screen. 4) Pick up the "Boot directly into the Lisp currently on the WorkSpace volume" procedure (II in the previous section) at step 4. For Further Information Further information about booting procedures can be found in the Xerox 1108 Users Guide that comes with the standard InterLisp-D release.
