Protocol from 7-9-84, S324 This piece of protocol is inaccurate and starts in the middle of the tape. But this is a very interesting part of the tape. E: Um... so/ so how do you know what are sort of the important cards/ like when you go in to write your paper how are you goint to know which are the important cards? S: Well, I think tha if I have done the job of making the fileboxes correctly/ I won't have any problem/ because that sort of breaks things down into managable units/ where there's only going to be 10 or 15 cards at a time/ and/ that's sort of something you can look at and say oh yes this is important or it's not/ but if you have to look at two hundred at a time/ so thats that's why I think it's important to keep up a pretty articulated structure/ that's broken down into pretty small units. E: well how do you identify the main ideas in your notefile then/ I mean/ S: how, hmm/ I don't know/ I mean it's sorta just/ E: Are they the th the fileboxes? S: Yeah! ets/ filebos.. or not an idea really/ but a topic and um/ E: Ah, and so then when you go thrugh what's in your filebox/ like you say there's a few note Cards/ so that the/ S: Yeah! E: the few main points/ S: There aren't too many of the fileboxes that have/ have a whole lot of cards in them/ so, I can look at them sort of as a group/ without getting too lost. E: And you have you have a like you said, a good understanding of the/ the material at this point/ S: its just bahz so that you can go in/ and look at these 15 cards/ E: and say, ya know, yeah/ S: oh I remember this card, yeah/ E: these.. these two are the sort of the big ones S: sure/ E: that I want to get across./ But is that represented in your file/ in any way/ do you use/ S: I don't know! (clears throat)/ I'm not sure, uhm.../ it may be um, by, na cards that are referred to a lot/ it's possible, I'm not sure if that's true or not/ umm/ it's hard to say/ one thing I ta I talked about with Tom/ awhile back, is th is the problem with the difference/ between...having it on the screen and having it in paper/ I find, like/ th, when I have things on paper/ it sort of just handling it and writing it, is/ something sticks in your head/ much more than these/ I don't remember these cards/ as well/ as I would have if I'd written them./ It's hard to explain, but/ like, I don't know if you have this/ too, but like if I'm thinking about a book/ er, notes or something I can sortof halfway remember where on the page/ you know it is/ and/ bu, in this, youknow/ I don hav/ E: You move around too much./ S:
