Thesis Reading Schedule October 10, 1984
This memo outlines the schedule I plan to follow for the writing and revision of my dissertation.
The long term constraint on setting the date of my defense will be Kelly Booth's departure from Waterloo for his sabbatical at UC Santa Cruz on or about March 1, 1985. He and I both wish to conduct my PhD defense prior to the end of February, assuming that minor revisions can be accomplished remotely especially since Kelly will be near PARC (and assuming that the defense can't be held in sunny California).
The date of the defense implies that the thesis needs to go on display January 15, 1985 for the expected one month display and reading time. To meet the display date I shall be writing a chapter a week before Christmas. Printed copies of each chapter will be mailed to Kelly at Waterloo, one for his comments and two copies for distribution to Beatty and Tompa.
If Beatty and Tompa choose to delay reading each chapter in this serial, then I would appreciate them carefully reading and critiquing the extended outline attached to this memo. Either way, I would prefer to establish a regime that limits surprises down the road since major detours will be awkward later on.
The outline I have is in danger of becoming a book. Kelly likes it that way, sigh. However, I could be easily convinced to expand some sections more than others. In particular, Chapters 1, 2, and 4 are outlined at almost the sentence level of detail so don't expect too much expansion there. Details for Chapter 3 will be taken from the ``Graphical Style'' paper published in Computer Graphics, v16, n3. Chapters 5 and 6 will be fleshed out more but is probably outlined at about the paragraph level. Chapter 7, the Glossary, is underway but will be a continuing project.
Cheers
Rick
