XEROX LAFITEPRIVATEDL 2 4 1 LafitePrivateDL 1 4 By: Nick Briggs (Briggs.pa@Xerox.com) Requires: Lafite and Grapevine mail INTERNAL This document last edited on January 20, 1987 INTRODUCTION The LafitePrivateDL package provides a mechanism for users of Lafite and the Grapevine mail system to keep files containing lists of addresses that can be treated as privately owned distribution lists. OPERATION Address Syntax Once the LafitePrivateDL package has been loaded Lafite, when sending mail in Grapevine mode, will recognize an address of the form filename:; as denoting a file from which it should read a set of addresses to be included in the particular address field. If the file name contains any "special" characters (such as { } < > . or ;) then the filename must be enclosed in double-quote marks. For example -- pa-area-friends:; "{qv}pa-area-friends":; Multiple private distribution lists may be specified in a single field (To: or Cc:) and may be intermixed with names of individual recipients and public distribution lists ÿÿï% separate them by all by commas.ÿ File Format The file containing the addresses should consist of one or more lines of text with addresses separated by commas. You may use any form of address in the file that Lafite would normally accept in the header of a message, including other private dls. Locating the DL file If you do not specify a host and directory as part of the filename Lafite will attempt to find the file first in your connected directory, then in the directory specified by LAFITEDEFAULTHOST&DIR, and finally in LAFITEDLDIRECTORIES [Variable] which should be a list of host and directory names. LAFITEDLDIRECTORIES is an INITVAR (initially NIL) and may be set before loading the LafitePrivateDL package. If no extension is specified as part of the filename Lafite will use the value of LAFITEDL.EXT [Variable] which is an INITVAR (initially DL) . It is not reccomended that you change this value. Errors If LafitePrivateDL is not loaded Lafite will report a malformed address for the private DL syntax. If the DL file cannot be found Lafite will report that fact and abort the sending of the message. HINTS The contents of the dl file does not replace the filename in the message. Recipients of the message will see the filename as you typed it. Remember that recipients of the message who Answer it will only be able to find the private distribution list if they also have the LafitePrivateDL package loaded, and either you specified a full pathname for the file, or they have the host/directory of the dl file on their LAFITEDLDIRECTORIES (and they have read access to the file). COMMENTS Don't flame about the syntax, it's the way it is so that if these messages go outside Xerox other peoples mailers won't choke on them.
