If you restrict RENAME by giving it a FILES argument, even one of length 1, it still calls COPYDEF with SOURCE = NIL, which means that COPYDEF has to invoke WHEREIS, which goes to the database, even though all along it is known that the fn being renamed lives on the one file that I gave as argument to RENAME.'
