I need to give Marty the new Promethus script for Carol release. Is the last script we did for DSK volume still vaild?'
'
I am enclosing the disk configurations for Carol as of last Prometheus.script, as wll as the copy of the script for your reference.'
'
Is 16200 still the right size for a full lisp volume? '
'
Please comment. Thanks.'

I think you would run into less risk if you made the 10MB configuration have 200 pages of DSK and bigger VMEM. The ''story'' is that the 10MB configuration is only reasonable for sites that have a random access file server or are willing to run connected to {FLOPPY}; I think we can continue with that story and leave {DSK} only for INIT.LISP and a few scratch files.'
'
I think LOOPS reaches 12000 pages easily, which is why I don''t think 11689 is reasonable.'
'
If there isn''t an AR about reducing the size of the Diagnostics volume, there should be, even if the Difficulty is Very Hard.'

Sounds fine, except':'
1. Should make lisp volume on 10 mb the last volume.'
2. Making the dsk volume as small as 200 pages on the 10 mb would make it worse than useless': I think you''d get out of disk space errors all the time. If you really need that much more vmem space, you should probably omit the dsk volume from the 10 mb machine altogether, and continue to use coredevice dsk (not a very savory alternative).'
3. I thought you had to up the diagnostics volume size to 4000 pages. Glad you could keep it at 3500.'
4. In the prometheus script, there should be an entry for booting diagnostics. I have gotten stuck a couple of times and had to use othello to reset the boot pointers -- not good.'

Thanks for the replies.'
'
	1. Should make lisp volume on 10 mb the last volume.'
'
This is my text arrangement error. Lisp is the LAST volume.'
'
	3. I thought you had to up the diagnostics volume size to 4000 pages. Glad you could keep it at 3500.'
	'
4000 Pages is the recommned size for Mesa 11 Klamath''s release. When it is installed, we should know the free pages and see what size we need.'
'
'
	4. In the prometheus script, there should be an entry for booting diagnostics. I have gotten stuck a couple of times and had to use othello to reset the boot pointers -- not good.'
	'
This will be corrected.'
'
'
	2) DSK remains at 1000 pages on 10Mb. Larry': The other option for 10Mb will be to have 1 LOOPS volume and no DSK volume? Do you want this? '
'
'
If there isn''t an AR about reducing the size of the Diagnostics volume, there should be, even if the Difficulty is Very Hard.'
'
I think by having a customoized boot file, the other advantage we gain is not the space but the SPEED. The time to do the 1-boot can be shortened. I heard in Klamath''s release the 1-boot time has been shortened. I am waiting to find this out. '

The options we decided for the 10MBute disk':'
'
Dsk Volume (pages)	Lisp Volume (pages)'
'
	3000 9689 Min Lisp configuration'
	 200 12489 Max Lisp configuration'
	1000 11689 Medium Lisp configuration'
'
'
This will allow for the installation of large sysouts such as Loops, or Age.'

running out of VMEM space is serious and not recoverable, so I''m dubious about the "Min Lisp" configuration, even making it available.'

Sounds fine. (But I''d be inclined to think that 3 different partitionings is overkill; I''d go for just the min and max ones.)'

This is the revision of the Dlion disk partitions for Carol release based on various persons input. I will make the prometheus script based on this. '
'
		DIAG.	Lisp	Lisp2	Lisp3	DSK	'
10MB 3500 10689	N/A N/A 2000'
'
10MB 3500 12189	N/A N/A 500'
		'

'
29 MB 3500 16200	16200	N/A	8896'
'
42 MB 3500 16200	16200	N/A	29376'
'
42 MB 3500 16200	16200	16200	13175'
'
'
(Note': Lisp is the LAST volume on 10Mb disks, and DSK is the LAST volume on 29 & 42 MB disks.'
'
For 10Mb disk, with a large DSK volume, ONLY 4 floppies should be loaded. Loading a 5th FULL floppy on a small Lisp will later on cause problem when booting off fromlisp.'

True, but Lisp will never extend beyond 2↑14 (16384) pages, so there is never a need to make a vmem bigger than that. One could even put ordinary files in the leftover space, although that is to be discouraged. Better to put all excess space in a DSK partition.'
