Submit AR': Update Interlisp-D to Services 8.0 protocol. (Communications/NS). Description': The Xerox NS protocols have changed to not require the ability to read passwords from the server, but rather to implement a more reasonable authentication protocol. Probably other changes have been made as well, e.g., the packet exchange protocol. The first task is to make sure that Interlisp-D will play properly with Services 8.0. The second task is to read carefully the release documentation and submit the ARs of what we have to do to take advantage of any new network services. (attn': Cooper).'

This message announces the fourth update to Services 8.0 System Test. It lists the changes made to the software and documentation since the third update of system test, and includes a current version of the original release message.'
'
This update is based on Pilot 11.0i.'

I looked at the Services 8.0 documentation in Larry''s office. I still need to look at the latest Courier specs for these protocols. Also, I need to know which servers are running Services 8.0 so that I can try using them from Lisp.'
'
Right now it looks like only minor changes (if any) will be necessary on the Lisp side regarding credentials.'
'
The changes to Filing may enable us to improve the performance of NSFILING. They now support version numbers (so no more horrible enumeration on every open) and lookup by pathname (eliminating the directory-by-directory walk down the tree).'

The message in the AR Update to System Test includes the names of the servers which run Services 8.0. We also have the "Inhouse installation of Services 8.0" document I think which will allow us to bring it up on our file server or some otehr workstation.'

Could you please forward me a copy of the message containing the list of Services 8.0 servers? I never saw it.'
'
Also, do you think we can change Phylex over without destroying the existing file system?'

Have you tried using file servers with Services 8.0 from Interlisp? Have there been any problems? Are any outstanding problems solved?'

I have at present no unsolved problems with Services 8.0 (and in fact, all the problems I''ve had have been independent of server version). I hope to merge my version into the sysout soon, probably tomorrow, since I don''t have time today. I had wanted to also add code to take advantage of improved functionality (real versions, pathnames) in Services 8.0, but haven''t gotten to that yet, and might not in time.'

Oops, I misinterpreted "Are any outstanding problems solved?"'
'
I have fixed a handful of NS related AR''s. None of the hard ones yet, unfortunately.'
