XEROX IMAGEWRITER 2 4 1 IMAGEWRITER 1 4 By: Ron Clarke (RClarke.pasa@Xerox.ARPA) INTRODUCTION IMAGEWRITER allows a user to print text files, windows and bitmaps on an Apple Imagewriter printer using the serial port on a Xerox 1108/1109/1186 workstation. This software will work on either the TTY port (labeled DCE) or RS232C port (labeled DTE). The RS232C port is standard on an 1186 and is part of the E-30 option kit on the 1108/1109. SOFTWARE REQUIRED IMAGEWRITER.DCOM DLTTY.DCOM or DLRS232C.DCOM (depending on the port that is being used) ICONW.DCOM FREEMENU.DCOM HARDWARE REQUIRED Apple Imagewriter or Imagewriter II. Both the standard and the wide carriage model are supported. CABLE CONNECTIONS The following cable connections are used to connect the Imagewriter to either the TTY or RS232 port. LOADING IMAGEWRITER Make sure that DIRECTORIES contains the directory where the required software is located. When the file IMAGEWRITER.DCOM is loaded, the item "Imagewriter" will be added onto the Background menu. At this point you may enter one of the following: FILENAME A filename of a text file to be printed. The text should be plain, unformatted text and should contain no Image Objects. If the text contains font information, it will be printed at the end of document and will cause a number of form feeds to occur before printing is completed. An ATOM The atom can be a pointer to either a window or bitmap. If the bitmap or window is too large to fit on the printer you will be prompted to select an edit option from a pop-up menu. Editing options include: Rotate, Clip Right Edge, Clip Left Edge, Clip Top Edge, Clip Bottom Edge, Shrink or a combination of these. WHICHW After typing WHICHW (no parenthesis) and before you type a carriage return, the cursor should be in the window that you want to print. If the window is too large to print, you will be prompted, as indicated above, to select an editing option. SCREENBITMAP This will cause the whole screen to be printed. If the screenbitmap is too large to print, you will be prompted, as indicated above, to select an editing option. STOPPING PRINTOUT Printing occurs as a background process and can be stopped at any time by buttoning STOP on the Imagewriter menu, or by killing the process IMAGEWRITER.PRINTING. If the latter is done, any files being printed will be left open. QUITTING IMAGEWRITER When the main Imagewriter window is closed the associated communication port and its output stream will be closed by the Imagewriter software. If the the Imagewriter window is shrunk the following icon shown below will be displayed. The new selection will invert . Paper Length, Lines Per Inch, Lines Per Page, Bits Per Line, Left Margin, Right Margin and Font File Name can be changed by buttoning the default item and typing in a new value where the caret appears. You can backspace and use the delete key while editing. You must type a carriage return to indicate the completion of editing. Char Pitch, Print Title, Rotate Image, Center Image, Print Window Borders and Load Custom Font are changed by buttoning on the default item and selecting an item from the pop-up menu that appears. NOTE: IN ALL CASES YOU MUST BUTTON "APPLY" TO ACTUALLY CHANGE THE DEFAULT SETTINGS AFTER CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE. The SHOW button is used to update the menu if an item has been changed by setting the variable associated with the item directly instead of by using the menu. The meaning of the defaults and the internal variable that is set is as follows: PORT: The port that the Imagewriter is connected to. This is either the TTY (labeled DCE) or RS232C, the default, (labeled DTE). IMAGEWRITERPRINTER will load the appropriate software when you select START from the Imagewriter menu. IMAGEWRITER.PORT is set to this. PROTOCOL: One of XOnXOff, the default, or DTR. The Imagewriter printer needs to be set so that it matches the protocol selected. The Imagewriter printer is normally preset at the factory to DTR. This can be changed via internal DIP switches. See the Imagewriter manual for details. IMAGEWRITER.PROTOCOL is set to this. BAUD RATE: One of 300, 1200, 2400 or 9600, the default. The Imagewriter printer needs to be set so that it matches the baud rate selected. The Imagewriter printer is normally preset at the factory to 9600 baud. This can be changed via internal DIP switches. See the Imagewriter manual for details. IMAGEWRITER.BAUD.RATE is set to this. PAPER LENGTH: This is the length of the printer paper. The default is 11 inches. IMAGEWRITER.PAPER.LENGTH is set to this. LINES PER INCH : This in the number of lines printed in an inch and is usually 6, 8 or 10 depending on the size font used. The default is 6. Any number between 2 and 144 is acceptable. IMAGEWRITER.LINES.PER.INCH is set to this. LINES PER PAGE: This is the number of lines to be printed on a page before a form feed is transmitted. The default is 60. IMAGEWRITER.LINES.PER.PAGE is set to this. CHAR PITCH: The Imagewriter has eight character pitch settings: Extended 9 CPI Pica 10 CPI Elite (default setting) 12 CPI Pica Proportional 144 DPI Elite Proportional 160 DPI Semicondensed 13.4 CPI Condensed 15 CPI Ultracondensed 17 CPI CPI = Characters Per Inch DPI = Dots Per Inch Note that for proportional pitches the maximum number of characters on a line varies because of the variable width of each character. The right margin setting should be set to accomodate the width of the widest character, the letter M, if only M's were printed across a single line. IMAGEWRITER.CHAR.PITCH is set to this. BITS PER LINE: This is the number of dots needed in graphics mode to fill the width of paper before an auto carriage return occurs. For 8 1/2 X 11 paper this is 576. For other widths, it is approximately (72 * (PAPERWIDTHINCHES - 1/2 INCH)). IMAGEWRITER.BITWIDTH is set to this. LEFT MARGIN: The location of the left margin. The default setting is 3. IMAGEWRITER.LMARGIN is set to this. RIGHT MARGIN: The location of the right margin. The default setting is 96. This determines the number of characters printed before word wrap occurs, depending on the character pitch used . IMAGEWRITER.RMARGIN is set to this. PRINT TITLE: One of yes or no, the default. A title containing the name of the file being printed, the user name and date will be printed at the top of the first page depending on this setting. IW.PRINT.TITLE is set to this. ROTATE IMAGE: One of yes, the default, or no. If yes, when printing a bitmap or window the image will be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise on the page. It is much faster to print a rotated image than a non-rotated image. IW.ROTATE.IMAGE is set to this. CENTER IMAGE: One of yes, the default, or no. If yes, when printing a bitmap or window the image will be centered horizontally and vertically on the page. If no, the image will be printed starting at the top left-hand corner of the page. IW.ROTATE.IMAGE is set to this. PRINT WINDOW BORDER: One of yes or no, the default. If yes, will print the border of a window when printing windows. IW.PRINT.WINDOW.BORDERS is set to this. LOAD CUSTOM FONT: One of no, the default, or yes. The Imagewriter has the ability to load in a custom font set for printing special characters and/or other language character sets. If yes is selected, before printing any text, the custom font file indicated by FONT FILE NAME below will be loaded into the Imagewriter. See the Imagewriter manual for details about custom fonts and how they can be used. IW.LOAD.CUSTOM.FONT is set to this. FONT FILE NAME: If LOAD CUSTOM FONT is YES, the font file indicated here will be loaded into the Imagewriter. The file should be in the format indicated in the Imagewriter manual and is generally as follows: ESC - or ESC + Selects maximum character width. ESC I Starts loading new character(s). CHAR The regular character that is assigned a new symbol. A...P or a...p Width code using top 8 or bottom 8 wires. 8-bit binary #s As many 8-bit binary numbers (in the form of ASCII characters) as were specified by the widthcode set.
