The upgrade was done in two stages, first, the hyper stuff was pulled out of my mac and I had just a macplus. So far so good, everything worked fine. Yesterday I had the hyperdrive upgrade installed (along with a replacement for the hard disk which had died) and now certain types of desk accessories will not run. In fact, they crash the system with error 3. The situation is this: any desk accessory that tries to open a window when launched bombs. Desk accessories which add a menu entry to the menu bar and don't do anything until you select something from the menu seem to work just fine. An example of the latter is Extras. None of the Apple das work at all, they all crash my machine. I've tried using old versions of the system, booting off floppies, etc. Does anybody out there have a clue as to what is going on? Did my dealer fry some location in the new roms when he installed my hyperdrive? When I first got the mac home, I was able to use the alarm clock DA to set the time but when I tried to open the control panel, the mac crashed. Since then I get the above described behavior. Lightspeed doesn't run at all with itself and a system in the ramdisk. It doesn't do much with just itself in the ramdisk (couldn't compile anything without running out of memory). I (currently) put a system, a minifinder, and MacTraps in the ramdisk (just over 100K). The minifinder is set to show only a minifinder (you do this by installing one, then selecting it and installing another one). Boot this disk. Click the minifinder "Drive" button until you get Ramdisk, then double-click the minifinder. This makes the mac forget about the system on the boot disk and use the one in the ram disk. Eject the boot disk. On another disk I keep Lightspeed, and all the standard #include libraries, and still have a fair amount of room. Since the boot disk is ejected and the system is in the ram disk, I can still put a data disk in one of the drives. If I run a program on another disk that has a system on it, I can still run the ramdisk Minifinder to reinitialize the ramdisk system. It seems to me that it would be better to leave MacTraps on the disk with Lightspeed in it and use some space in the ramdisk for *part* of Lightspeed. My idea - which I haven't got around to trying - is to move some of Lightspeed's CODE resources into the system that gets put on the ramdisk and delete them from the Lightspeed application. Would this work - or does the segment loader only load CODEs that actually come from the executing application? If it would work, this would be a way of getting part of Lightspeed to speed up (virtually instantaneous swapping of the hacked segments) and still having enough memory to do something useful... -- | Paul DuBois {allegra,ihnp4,seismo}!uwvax!uwmacc!dubois --+-- | Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings | toward the south? Horst Greilich ------------------------------ From: tgia@ur-tut.UUCP (Tony Giaccone) Subject: Interrupts on the Mac Date: 20 May 86 23:04:20 GMT Organization: Univ. of Rochester Computing Center Hi folks, I'm hoping that someone out there will be able to help me with a problem I'm having. I'm trying to bypass the serial driver and work directly with the SCC. To this end I've written code which will allow me to read and write directly to the SCC. I can send data out or receive it at any baud rate as long as I poll the SCC. Now I want to be able to use interrupts to drive my code. However, I can't seem to get the interrupts to act the way I think they do, so there must be something I'm missing. First I'll explain how I think this mess works and then I'll describe what happens when I execute my code. As I understand it there are seven levels of interrupts on the 68000. The SCC will interrupt using vector 2. When a level 2 interrupt occurs the PC is loaded with the value at location $68. The code which is executed then determines why the SCC interrupted the processor and does a jsr to a value located in the Lvl2DT table. A displacement of 24 bytes into this table holds the address of the code to be called if a character has been received on port a. As I understand it all i should have to do is load that table with the address of my code and set up the SCC to interrupt on receive character available. Here's how things work now. I have TMON installed, so that I can stop the execution of my code at any point. In order to catch the interrupts that I'm interested in I replace the level 2 and 3 interrupt vectors at locations $68 and $6c to point to my code. All my code does is jmp to the locations that were originally in those two vectors. I do this so that I can set break points at the jumps, so that every time a level 2 or 3 interrupt occurs I fall into TMON. I know this works because every time I move the mouse I drop into TMON. However, when I send a character to the modem port my Mac hangs up. I'm at a loss to understand why this happens, any help would be appreciated. If anyone has a section of code that does what I need that would be great. Does your application bundle refer to non-existent resources? 2. Does your Mac bomb when you boot with your application disk? 3. Does the Finder gasp and choke when you try to copy the file? An acquaintance was complaining of (2) and (3); I discovered this weekend that (1) was the cause. When the Finder encounters a "new" application with the bundle bit set, it copies the bundle resource and the resources it refers to into the Desktop. If a referenced resource is non-existent, the Finder sets its ID to -1 in the Desktop copy of the bundle. It then proceeds, at least some of the time, to assume that the "-1" is a legitimate resource ID. The initial encounter doesn't seem to cause much trouble, but copying and booting often end in bombs. The reason for the bad bundle was a misunderstanding. The resource counts in the bundle are actually count - 1. (For example, zero means one.) If you insist on putting the actual count in, you'll have bogus references in your bundle. I had a lot of trouble with the 3d-plotting application that came over the net about a month back - attempting to copy it after unpacking consistently made my MacXL freeze solid.
