Here are some hints that you mayfind helpful:1.Hold the mouse so that the endconnected to the wire points directlytoward the back of your desk or table. This makes the movements of fhe cursoron the screen correspond exactly tothose of the mouse on the tabletop.2.Use a thick plastic pad, or some othersmooth, flat surface on which to roll themouse, rather than rolling it directly onthe tabletop. This makes the mouse'smovements smoother and easier tocontrol. Keep the pad free of dust orashes, as both will hinder the movementof the mouse. 3.When moving the mouse, hold it firmlybetween your thumb and middle finger, using your index finger to press thebuttons. Do not let go of the mouse inorder to press a button, since this maycause the cursor to wander from thedesired position.4.If you find you are reaching too far orhave to lean forward in order to controlthe mouse, pick it up and move it backto a more comfortable position. Thecursor only responds to the rolling ofthe ball on the bottom of the mouse, and will not move when the mouse islifted from the table. The mouse may beplaced on either side of the keyboard. tu5tutu%<[ &f2vXXzvX RZtvt!v% !PI "!N8%Kv){){Ie ){GT){EC"){C2 ){A!%>_){!){Detail Print Find < > Subst < > Confirm Styles: On ShowOPTION MENUS Certain commands cause the standard editing menuat the head of a document window to be replacedby an option menu. At this point thescreen will return to normal and you can continueworking.NAMING CONVENTIONSNever use punctuation or spaces in a document title(e.g., comma, @, $, &, ~, *). Use hyphens asseparators. You may use numbers or a period inthe title. For example, the titleBudgetMemo-January.EDindicates that a memo was created in January andis budget-related. The extension ".ED" indicatesthat it was created using the EDITOR. Periods aremost often used when separating the file name withthe method of the file creation (in the above case, the EDITOR). This memo could have also beennamedBudgetMemo1-January.EDto indicate that there might be more than one memoregarding budgets during the month of January. Document titles up to 20 characters will be shown inthe document catalog. If a document title is morethan 20 characters it will be partially shown in thedocument catalog followed by an ellipsis. st5stst%<[-Mf2q _s!q(!]![!Y !St0!Qc!OR $!MA %!K0!I!G @sqs !q!>!< !:&6!0Q!.@!,/sq !*$ !( 0!%)sq*!#&!!&!P)!?! . Using key words or initials, as the first part of thetitle, allows you to group related documentstogether in the Document Catalog.DOCUMENT SIZEThe maximum size of a document is 60,000characters. This is about 20 pages of typed text. When a document is saved, the status windowindicates how many characters there currently are inthe document. For this reason, it is important toalways read the status window each time you save adocument. It is possible you may have a document which isclose to the 60,000 character limit, yet still havemuch to add to the document. In this case, you willneed to make new files to separate the largedocument into segments (or chapters, if you prefer). Each segment will be a separate document in thedocument catalog. A paragraph is formatted bymarking commands in the Paragraph menu and applying them to a selectedparagraph. Some of the terms used in this section may be unfamiliar to you. Listed beloware some of the terms you will need to know.LEADLead (pronounced "led") is the term used for theamount of white space appearing between lines orparagraphs of text.PARAGRAPHA paragraph is a distinct portion of written materialdealing with a particular idea, usually beginning withan indentation on a new line. In the XEROXDOCUMENT SYSTEM, a paragraph is the text of adocument that is underlined (selected) when thecursor is placed in the left side of the documentand the MIDDLE mouse button is pressed.PROPERTIESThe properties of a paragraph are its formattingfeatures or characteristics. Its function in this system isreplaced by the Keep: commands described above.Printer COMMANDTo facilitate reading and editing, text displayed onthe screen generally appears larger than in print. Therefore, fewer characters appear on one line indisplay mode than in print. It is difficult to judgewhat word actually begins a new line in print, howtabulated text will appear, and whether a headingactually fits on one line. For example, a line of textin this paragraph is approximately 33 characterslong as it appears on the screen (display mode.) Inprint, the same line would contain approximately 47characters (the numbers are approximate becausethis paragraph is justified, and text is expanded orcontracted to fill the defined space.)Printer is a miscellaneous command that providesthe ability to view text in hardcopy mode, and assure that whenever the document is brought tothe screen the selection will still be displayed inhardcopy mode. That is, you will be able to seewhere text will appear in the printed document.
