There may be a need to use alto FTP, rather than the existing Lisp, as a means to store disk files "off disk" somewhere (such as on an IFS). In particular, if you have deleted the Lisp.VirtualMEM file, or somehow managed to mung the environment, and thus don't have a working Lisp, then you need such recourse. At any rate, alto FTP is available from the net exec, and the following program will make it easey to generate two .cm files for this purpose. It is on Library>MAKEDSKSAVER (only the source is there -- it doesn't really need to be run compiled). The tricky thing is to ensure that Lisp's hokey version numbers on the alto disk will be preserved throughout the process. Usage: (MAKEDSKSAVER L SAVE.HOST/DIR SF RF) where L is a list of file names to be "saved". SAVE.HOST/DIR is a hostname and directory specification of a place to store, or "save", the files. SF (optional). Defaults to {DSK}FTPSaveDiskFiles.cm is filename for the .cm file which FTP's files off the local disk and onto the "saving" place. RF (optional). Name field defaults to FTPRestoreDIskFiles, and other fields are defaulted from SF; this is a filename for the .cm file which FTP's files from the "saving" place back to the local disk. After producing these .cm files, then at the appropriate time each one is FTP'd to the local disk, and "run", e.g., by @FTPSaveDiskFiles.cm@ ² TIMESROMAN²z·
