AS THE XEROX 1108 ARRIVES PRE-PARTITIONED AND PRE-LOADED WITH UTILITYSOFTWARE, THE USER IS SUALLY CONCERNED ONLY WITH THE LAST OF THESE THREEOPERATIONS. gdpXq@p gd*?dF*j)p(;]s"`[ gV(RLp NpJGDpA|p>t5;l58dp$5\p)2Tp8.x+ g*s g&pG"8'(51# gJ K9 g6 g TVk( XEROX1108 Users Guide24However, under certain circumstances, i.e., an international disk partitioning or a `Catastrophicerror,' it is necessary to repartition the rigid disk and reinstall utility software on the Diagnosticsvolume. This chapter describes the entire installation process in detail. The diskis pre-partitioned with multiple logic volumes, depending on the disk size. The 10 Mbdisk is partitioned into 3 logical volumes named Diagnostics, DSK and Lisp. The 29and 43 Mb disks are partitioned into a subset of the following logical volumes:Diagnostics, Lisp, Lisp2, Lisp3, and DSK.The Diagnostics logical volume utilizes 3500 pages (1 page = 512 bytes) andcontains the Profile Tool, the Online Diagnostics Tool, and the Lisp Installation Toolfor:1)installing Interlisp-D on the local rigid disk and2)moving between Interlisp-D volumes on the local disk. The DSK volume is an area in which you may store permanent user files and is contained onevery disk. The logical volume Lisp, Lisp2, and Lisp3 can each contain a complete Interlisp-D environment. Each volume holds the Lisp virtual memory which is initialized from the floppy disks, file server,or another Lisp volume on the local disk.AVAILABLE DISK CONFIGURATIONS (in pages)DiagnosticsLispLisp2Lisp3DSK10MB350010689N/AN/A2000350012189N/AN/A50029MB350016200N/AN/A2509735001620016200N/A889643MB35001620016200N/A29376350016200162001620013175b.PARTITIONING INSTRUCTIONSWhen it becomes necessary to repartition the disk =>1.Boot the floppy labeled `Installation Utility' (using a 2-boot).- if your 1108 is not on a network, you will be prompted to set the time.See SETTING THE TIME for details.2. When it becomes necessary to reinstall theUtility software, and once the rigid disk is partitioned, obtain the floppy disks labeled `InstallationUtility' and Diagnostic Files' distributed with the Interlisp-D software kit.1.IF AN INSTALLATION MENU IS NOT CURRENTLY DISPLAYED, Boot the floppylabeled `Installation Utility', using a 2-boot. After about 2 minutes, a menu of utilityoptions will be displayed. - if your 1108 is not on a network, you will be pormpted to set the time. SeeSETTING THE TIME for details.2.Select the menu item INSTALL DIAGNOSTICS. The message "Ready to installdiagnostic boot files" will appear, and you will be asked if you wish to continue.Unload the floppy drive and load the floppy labeled `Diagnostic Files". Respond `Y'to the "Continue?" prompt.3.The microcode will be installed first. When this operation is complete, the message"Lisp Microcode Installed" will appear. Then the diagnostic files are installed. Thisprocedure takes several minutes. The message "Diagnostic files installed" willinform you when this operation is complete.4.At this point, you are ready to load the Lisp Installation Tool software. When theinstallation menu reappears, 1-boot the rigid disk.5.After about 2 minutes, the cursor will change to a pointing arrow. Activate theExecutive window by positioning the cursor over the letters `cut' within the word`Executive' in the small window in the bottom left hand corner of the screen andpress the left mouse button. This will cause the small window to expand to a largewindow. Press any mouse key when the cursor is inside of the large window toactivate type-in to that window.6.Unload the floppy drive and insert the `Installation Utility' floppy. 7. Type in `del *',which will delete all current files. gdpXq@p gd*?dF*j)p]c3[;Y0c)V gS X+ gODC gM Q gJ` gHED)B:@d<"+:T6x04D 62 C/,I)8'.%d%!LT 'x(#D8 8?5t H dTVk( XEROX1108 Users Guide278.Type in `floppy read LispInstallationTool.bcd'. You should be able to hear the floppydrive as the file LispInstallationTool.bcd is transferred from the floppy disk to therigid disk.9.Type `LispInstallation'. This will load the file that should get you to the bouncingwhite square on your display. At this point, you are ready to use the `Profile Tool' tocreate the necessary site-specific file that provides information used by theLispInstallationTool.10.Press both left and right mouse buttons to activate the Prifile Tool. Fill in theappropriate values for the various parameters. If your 1108 is attached to a Xerox NSClearinghouse, you must set the Domain and Organization parameters to the namesdefined in your Clearinghouse database. Thos users without an NS Clearinghousemay set these parameters to any reasonable name or may leave them as they are.You do not have to supply values for all parameters in the window. In particular, if apassword is supplied, it is stored on the disk in an unencrypted form. The ProfileTool supplies default values for the various fields in the LispInstallationTool. See thedescription of the Profile Tool for details.11.After setting hte appropriate parameters, execute the SET PROFILE! command bypositioning the cursor over the command and pressing either mouse button. Confirmwith the left mouse button. When the word `Done' appears in the window, select`Quit!'. The Profile Tool window will disappear and you will return to the bouncingwhite box. At this point, you are ready to install Interlisp-D software on your Lispvolume(s).3)INSTALLING INTERLISP-D SOFTWARE ON THE LISP VOLUME(S)There are three ways to install Interlisp-D software on a Lisp volume. You may install fromfloppy disks, from your file server {NS,IFS}, or from another logical volume on your local disk.a.INSTALLING INTERLISP-D SOFTWARE FROM FLOPPIESYou may install Interlisp-D in the form of the Interlisp sysout from the floppiesdistributed with the Interlisp-D software kit. gdpXq@p gd*?dF*j)p]B[MYwUQSg:Q33!4&NK#*HXYF 5D:BS ">wI/ L, !(F& 6$!*"_? +; g X+ g?B g Z/- S B # TVk( XEROX1108 Users Guide28To do so =>1. 2-boot the `Installation Utility' floppy distributed with the Interlisp-Dsoftware kit.- if your 1108 is not on a network, you will be prompted to set the time.See SETTING THE TIME for details.2. When the Installation menu appears, select the item labeled `InstallInterlisp on Lisp/x volume'.NOTE: The 10Mb disk has only one Lisp volume: whereas, the 29 Mvand the 43 Mb disks have two or three Lisp volumes of the form- Lisp,Lisp2, Lisp3.3.Follow the dialog to load your Interlisp-D floppies. For different Lispsysout files, you may have from three (3) to five (5) floppies. (Afterloading the floppy labeled `Lisp sysout #3', you are asked if there isAnother Disk? If you mistakenly respond `Y', you do not have to redothe entire installation procedure; a 1-boot will return you to the `BaseState' of the 1108 from which you can start your Lisp volume or Quit.) 4.Select the `Boot Diagnostics volume' option which will return you to the`Base State'. Click the left mouse button putting you into the LispInstallation Tool.5.Select the `Set VMem!` command and confirm with the left mousebutton. After about 10 seconds, the message: "Approximate maximumVMem Size = X pages" will appear. Enter the value of X for the newvalue of the VMem Size parameter, in the PARAMETER WINDOW.6.Select the `Set VMem!' command and confirm with the left mousebutton once again in order to set the new VMem Size.7.Select the `Boot!' command to begin Interlisp-D.b.INSTALLING INTERLISP-D SOFTWARE FROM A FILE SERVER "BEFOREINSTALLATION" =>There are two types of file servers which permit the user to access files, in particularthe file containing Lisp Sysout: IFS (Interim File Server) and NS (Network SystemsServer). After identifying the appropriate file server TYPE for your site, identify yourparticular file ->your HOST.The Lisp Installation Tool, loaded during the Utility Software Installation phase, allowsyou to install Interlisp-D software from your file server. gdpXq@p gd*?dF*j)p][dKY0cV"&TR/OcMW!K#>HFtc=D@/B 6?7=E;pA8c>6,4 2c4/'-/+v5(c4&.$Lc0 p !< `$/,@= ? 7 7TVk( XEROX1108 Users Guide29The tool is activated when you have a bouncing white square on your CRT, i.e.,you're in the `Base State'. If you cannot enter the `Base State' with a 1-boot, thenmake sure you have installed the Utility software correctly, especially followingthrough steps 9 and 10.From the `Base State' of the 1108, click the left mouse button to activate the LispInstallation Tool. The Lisp Installation Tool is a window-based tool composed of five regions: the 1)Herald, 2) Message subwindow, 3) PARAMETER SUBWINDOW, 4) COMMANDSUBWINDOW, and 5) File subwindoow.Fill in the appropriate parameters in the PARAMETER SUBWINDOW. The Fileparameter specifies the complete pathname of the List sysout file to be installed. Thesyntax of the complete pathname depends on the TYPE of file server you will beutilizing =><1>IFS: [Host][Subdirectory> ...>FileName.Sysouteg. YourCommand Subwindow is redisplayed with a twiddling graphic symbol, while theMessage Subwindow displays the number of bytes which have currently beentransferred to your disk. This gives you an idea of the time remaining for the filetransfer. (An average size sysout takes from 3-4 minutes to install.) THIS COMMANDIS ABORTABLE BY DEPRESSING THE "STOP" KEY located on the lower right sideof the keyboard. When the sysout is installed, `Done' will appear in the Message Subwindow. Nowone may select `Quit!' to stop the process and return to the `Base State' or `Boot!' toenter the Lisp volume and begin Interlisp-D. gdpXq@p gd*?dF*j)p]9[*%Yw$)WCSg$+Q3 MW9K#%9H E?B,!@E>w:634'0,G*[;(k$; "[ : ' 7 @1BW {FG+)'TVk( XEROX1108 Users Guide30c.INSTALLING INTERLISP-D SOFTWAREFROM ANOTHER LISP VOLUME The Copy VMem! command of the Lisp Installation Tool may be used to installInterlisp-D Software in the form of the Interlisp sysout on a Lisp volume from anotherLisp volume already loaded with Interlisp-D.
